CULTURE AND TERRITORY
The territory of Villagrande ranges from the dizzy heights of Bruncu Spina Mountain (1828 m.) to
the coast of Ogliastra where the sea is crystal-clear. The valley below, protected from the winds because it is
set in the middle of a semicircle of green mountains, contains the rarest specimens of the maquis; at the slopes
of the Gennargentu Mountain, on a plateau placed at an altitude of 850 metres, the hamlet of Villagrande rises, Villanova
Strisaili, where you can enjoy the wonderful view of Flumendosa Lake: an expanse of green water
where the highest tops are reflected and where you can fish the rare Sardinian trout. The abundance of spring
waters has allowed the growth of many woods: Santa Barbara, Sa Pauli, M. Idolo, Sarominis, Nuradulu.
In the territory of Villagrande there are many archeological monuments: well-preserved domus de janas in Coile Bruxiau
, Su Strumpu, S’Orciada and Su Settili, while a menhir is situated in
Sa Preda e’ S’Orcu. Moreover there are seven tombs of giants and seventeen nuraghs, among
which we recommend S’Arcu ‘e is Forros, both dating back to a nuraghic period.
The establishment of the craft area of Su Biviu has revolutionized the economy of the village,
once dependent exclusively on sheep-breeding; in the past few years many different factories have been created: two ham factories, one cheese
factory, one that markets long-life goat milk, various business that work iron and wood, a mink farm and a perrot farm.
