CULTURE AND TERRITORY
Urzulei was founded many centuries ago, in an inacessible territory at the foot of the Supramonte plateau.
As every year thousands of tourists come to this village in order to enjoy of a stunning nature, it has been specializing in environmental
tourism: in fact, this area abounds in natural beauties like gorges, canyons, dolinas, swallow-holes, cliffs, chasms and
unexplored caves. Everything is wrapped up by wide groves of holm-oaks and oaks, where wild animals live and
unique plants grow, like the “mountain rose” or “peonia mascula”.
The gorge of Gorroppu, the deepest canyon in Europe, is really worth visiting: it was hollowed out by the
waters of Rio Flumineddu which, in the space of a few millenniums, eroded the rocks, thus shaping 500
metres high walls. While visiting this natural heritage, you will be surprised by the contrast
between the green of the holm-oaks and the white of the rocks of karstic origins. In the Supramonte
plateau it is possible to go on mountain hikes, cycle rides, horse rides or on cross-country races; beyond enjoying a total immersion
in the environment, you will be able to see staggering nuraghic villages. Among these, we recommend Os
Murales, a complex placed on the brink of a precipice ending on the “Codula Elune”, while in S’Arena
there are megalithic structures called tombs of giants.
The rennet of goat, which has been transformed nowadays into an excellent cheese, is the most typical product of Urzulei, along
with the bitter honey made with strawberry trees flowers. Beyond the famous hams and roasts of pork or goat, a local dish is
macarrones imboddiaus, spaghetti served with abundant melted cheese.
