CULTURE AND TERRITORY
Lanusei is the most important town in Ogliastra; it lies as an amphitheatre on the hill ridges of Gennargentu
Mountain. It is set in the heart of the wood of Selene, a green area teeming with holm-oaks,
sessile oaks and springs; while walking along its famous lanes, you can see through a thick vegetation the remains of a nuragh and two tombs of giants,
built with local granite and recently restored, dating back to the XVth century b.C.
Beyond being the seat of the Court, of the Civil Hospital and of the Diocese, Lanusei boasts an astronomic observatory on the top of
Armidda Mountain, reported on various scientific journals as its position is extremely useful for observations due to
the absence of pollution. The planetarium of the Gymnasium is a good complement to it. They are both open to the
public.
A great part of its territory is crossed by the “Train in the Wilderness” that stops at the local railway station before
entering the hinterland; during the journey it crosses the charming high grounds of “Pizzu Cuccu” and
of “Su Carmu”, from which you can appreciate the landscape of the green valleys below.
From the top of Armidda Mountain the view is also amazing: it ranges from the characteristic rock of “Perda Liana”,
to Tricoli Mountain, from the porphyr ridge of “Serra Coronedda” to the
coastal plain.
