CULTURE AND TERRITORY
Surrounded by various villlages, Elini is the smallest one in Ogliastra, both because of the extent of its territory and of the
exiguous population. It rises at the foot of the mountains, which wrap it around as if they wanted to protect it from the strong
winds blowing in this area; from this privileged position you will enjoy a charming panorama including even a view of the
Tyrrhenian Sea. Due to a favourable geographic location, this land is full of vineyards and of olive groves,
which give excellent and well-known wines and oils. At the centre of the village a very ancient railway station
, dating back to the XIXth century, rises, whose granite signalman’s house attracts many visitors. If you feel like
exploring new territories, then you must try the train in the wilderness: it is like putting the clock back, when
travelling by train allowed the passengers to plunge into the landscape. During spring and summer, crossing the Ogliastra hinterland
almost at a walking pace is a thrilling experience.
The Carmine park is really worth visiting as it is teeming with ancient holm-oaks and cool spring waters; inside the park you can
see the country church of the Vergine del Carmine, since 1919 an unaivodable destination
for many local people. In July Elini inhabitants wake up at down to go there in procession; to them it means going back to the origins,
in a place where, beyond the presence of two nuraghs, there are tracks of a first settlement.
