CULTURE AND TERRITORY
Cardedu’s history is rather unusual: this small village was born in the early fifties when a terrible flood
in the village of Gairo compelled the population to look for new settlements. Cardedu proves to be one of the most active and liveliest towns in
Ogliastra because it is trying every year to increase tourism more than any other: along its shore many holiday villages have been built, among which
the most known are Perdepera and Corte Bianca. From a geographic point of view, Cardedu stands in a territory that
expands around Ferru Mountain (875 metres above sea level), teeming with woods where cork-oars, holm-oaks and ancient
junipers grow; the Mediterranean scrub begins to appear next to the shore, while by the beaches gramineae reign supreme.
The coast here is a very special one: tiny inlets alternate with stretches of sand, reefs follow grey stones, thus shaping a varied
seascape. Foddini is a unique beach because of the presence of a small lake, Museddu and Perdepera
still have a sandy seashore; instead, the wide Su Sirboni and Coccorocci consist of porphyritic pebbles.
Near Coccoroci a very well equipped camping site has been born, attended particularly during summer periods. Moreover
Cardedu sea is usually chosen by many surfers because the sirocco wind blows here around 15 knots.
Local handicraft as baskets, demijohns and mats made from wood or rattan are widespread in the surroundings but they represent a
hobby more than a tradition. The excellent wines Cannonau and Perda Rubia are produced here, by strong local grapes.
At Cucudadasa you can find a sacred well called “Su presoneddu”; it is worth visiting the ancient
country church of the Madonna di Buon Cammino (XIIth century), which centuries ago was moved into a place
sheltered from the raid of Saracen pirates.
